Description

The T-34-85E is a premium gift rank IV Soviet medium tank
with a battle rating of 5.7 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.49 «Weapons of Victory». Essentially a gift version of the T-34-85, it has nearly the same characteristics and the only difference would be the mesh screens added onto the turret and hull. It was discontinued after the 2018 Victory Day sales.

The T-34-85E is an improvement over the original’s predecessor, the T-34-85 (D-5T) with a better armament, ammo, and an additional crew member. Aside from that, the two’s technical specification are pretty much the same.

The front hull armour is only 45 mm thick, even when sloped this is a pitiful amount of armour to fight with against the other vehicles at its BR as every other tank gun can penetrate that armour. Thus if possible, do not prolong the exposure of the hull armour towards the enemy.

As the T-34-85E is statistically the same as the T-34-85, many of the latter’s strategy work well in the former. The T-34-85E’s best play style is that of a flanker. Due to its high mobility, fast turret traverse, and a capable cannon with excellent post-penetration damage, the T-34-85E fills this role perfectly. Since the turret is so tall, it makes combat behind low obstacles difficult, as the turret segment above the main gun is visible. The T-34-85E’s other play style can be as a support tank, by keeping up with more protected vehicles like the IS-2 and supplement firepower while their heavy armament reloads.

The T-34-85E would not make a very suitable short-range brawler though even with the 85 mm gun as the gun has a rather tedious reload for the specific play style and the T-34’s armour is very poor at its BR. With that, the T-34-85E would tend to be able to fire one shot at a close enemy before it gets taken out by other enemies nearby. However, it is understandable that the situation is unavoidable, so it is recommended to stay steady by firing one shot at an unsuspecting enemy at close range before retreating to reload, evading enemy shots.

History

The Soviet Union sold numerous T-34-85 tanks along with other vehicles to the People’s Republic of China in the early 1950s since the new nation had few and often obsolete tanks in its inventory after the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War. The T-34s saw limited deployments with the People’s Liberation Army during the Korean War. The history of the tank afterwards has been the subject of debate; according to some sources the PRC attempted and possibly succeeded at creating a local copy of the T-34 under a «Type 58» designation, and according to others this was never a goal, no such tanks ever existed, and only efforts to maintain and repair the T-34s were carried out. Regardless the T-34s were soon superseded by the far superior Type 59, a licensed copy of the Soviet T-54A. However, stocks of T-34s remained in the PLA inventory for a long period of time before domestic tanks were available in sufficient quantity.

T-34s in Chinese service were often upgraded to a standard referred to by some as the «Type 58». The exact details and universality of these upgrades are also nebulous, but known characteristics include a new loader’s cupola capable of mounting a heavy machine gun, hardpoints on the right turret cheek for stowing away said machine gun, and a modified hinge for the rear transmission cover. Other upgrades may have been carried out as well.

The vehicle represented in War Thunder also features a splashboard welded onto the upper glacis. The «Gai» in its designation (改) means «modified» in Chinese.

Crew Skills

  • Repair as the first skill for all the crew members is a solid choice, allowing broken tracks or other damaged modules to be brought to operational condition as quickly as possible. The T-34-85 tends to get tracked fairly often or have its turret traverse mechanism damaged due to the shot trap the turret and hull create. Camouflage is also viable, but the T-34-85 has worse camouflage values than its predecessor, making it somewhat less useful.
  • A more specialized set of first skills would be Recon (Commander), Snap Shot (Gunner), Smooth Ride (Driver), Situational Awareness (Radio Operator). The loader only has perks available, which are not useful until they have reached 100%, Repair or Camouflage are viable options for the loader, which may later be swapped out for his perks. The combination of Snap Shot and Smooth Ride act like a Vertical Stabilizer (which the T-34-85 does not have access to), reducing the accuracy penalties while moving or turning the turret, and by extension, allowing the T-34-85 to get an accurate shot off faster after stopping. Recon and Situational Awareness increase the tank’s decent 360 m view range further. Mentor may also be used instead of Recon if the emphasis is on getting the other crew members’ skills up faster. Smooth Ride may be substituted with Off-Road Driving for improved overall mobility, if a more close combat-oriented playstyle is preferred.
  • Upon reaching 100% on the first skills, dropping the commander’s skill for Sixth Sense is a good option. The loader’s skill may be dropped in favor of Safe Stowage or Adrenaline Rush. However, the T-34-85 does not have a particularly vulnerable ammunition rack, while Adrenaline Rush is highly situational, so neither of these perks are particularly essential.
  • Brothers-in-Arms is a good perk to have on any tank, but requires all crew members to have it at 100% before it works. The bonus to crew skills is particularly noticeable when combined with Improved Ventilation.

Early Research

  • The 9RM radio is the only module that carries over from the T-34. The 122 mm U-11 can be researched on the KV-1.
  • The 85 mm ZiS-S-53 is required to unlock the second turret, the D5T-85BM, as well as the T-43.
  • The T-34-85 extended turret is needed to unlock the 85 mm D5T-85BM, the T-34-85’s best gun. They are not needed to unlock anything but are highly recommended to be researched.
  • The V-2-34M is required to unlock the final V-54 engine, which provides a significant increase in mobility.
  • Both the 85 mm D5T-85BM and V-54K engine are used on the next tank, the Tier 7 T-43, and are in fact its top gun and engine as well. The other Soviet Tier 7 medium tank, the KV-13, also uses the D5T-85BM as its top gun, and it is one of two guns available to the Tier 7 LTTB light tank, Tier 7 IS heavy tank, and Tier 8 T-44 medium at the start of their grinds. Unlocking these modules on the T-34-85 first is highly recommended.
  • All upgraded modules can be equipped with the stock T-34-85 suspension, so the T-34-85-60 suspension can be saved for last. It does provide a small bonus to the hull traverse speed.
  • If the U-11 has not been researched, it may be skipped entirely unless eliting the T-34-85 is the goal.

Description

The T-34-85 is a rank IV Soviet medium tank
with a battle rating of 5.7 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced during the Closed Beta Test for Ground Forces before Update 1.41. Though similar to the T-34-85 (D-5T), it has an improved gun and a full crew for combat efficiency.

The T-34-85 is an improvement over its predecessor, the T-34-85 (D-5T) with a better armament, a shorter reload time, APCR ammo, and an additional crew member. Aside from that, both tanks share the same technical specification.

The front hull armour is only 45 mm thick, even when sloped this is a pitiful amount of armour to fight with against the other vehicles at the same BR as every other tank gun can penetrate that armour. Thus if possible, do not prolong the exposure of the hull armour towards the enemy.

Notes:

  • The gun mantlet has 90 mm in front with additional small and thin 40 mm plates on the sides of the gun.

The armour layout of the T-34-85 Gai is virtually identical to the T-34-85. The hull armour, while well angled, is very thin for its rank and can be penetrated by nearly any tank cannon. Creative use of angling can still lead to the occasional bounce. The 90 mm thick turret is also thin for its rank, but the good sloping on the sides can also lead to bounces with some luck.

The T-34-85 has very poor survivability due to the fact that all 5 crew members are packed close to each other. A hull penetration will likely knock out all of them. However, inexperienced players that face this tank will often shoot the lower hull part of the driver hatch, which is infamous for being surprisingly resilient.

The T-34-85 Gai has excellent mobility for a medium tank, as expected of a T-34. It can reach high speeds both on and off road thanks to its wide tracks. The reverse speed is not exactly great, but it is significantly better than those of comparable Shermans, Panthers, and early T-34s (76 mm, 57 mm variants).

History

Main article:

T-34-85E

In the final months of World War II, the T-34-85 was still very adequate as a medium tank, but the high casualties suffered by the fanatic defenders of Germany and their anti-tank weapons made the crew seek out a way to increase the tank’s survivability against these infantry weapons. The crew improvised in the field modifications, and one of the method to shield the T-34s was to apply thin metal sheets or mesh screens onto the T-34 body in hopes that it would disrupt the warheads of Panzerfaust or Panzershreck before it detonates on the hull. These improvised T-34-85s were called T-34-85E with «E» for «ekranami» or «with screens».

However, it was found that these improvisation actually did not reliably stop an anti-tank warhead from penetrating the armour of the tank, or even disrupt the flight path to the target, the warhead would often just tear through the extra screens and hit the hull. Therefore, the practice of adding these screens was actually not widespread throughout the entire armoured forces, but enough were made that they were documented during the Battle of Berlin in many historical photographs as casualties from the tank crew man are so high that any chances of survival are taken in hopes of living to fight another day.

Overall, except with the addition of improvised screenings, the T-34-85E performed just like a regular T-34-85 in terms of mobility and firepower.

In-game description

The T-34-85 medium tank was equipped in field conditions with screens to protect it against high-explosive antitank projectiles during the assault on Berlin. During the Berlin strategic offensive the Red Army’s tank divisions encountered a problem with increased human casualties and lost combat vehicles due to the enemy’s use of portable anti-tank grenade launchers with high-explosive antitank grenades. The greatest difficulty involved conducting military operations in urban areas, where the enemy had the opportunity to use portable anti-tank guns from a large amount of cover at close range. One of the attempts to reduce the effectiveness of these munitions involved using mesh screens installed on the body of the tank a certain distance from the armour plating. These mesh screens were presumably built in tank-repair workshops. However, the screens did not provide effective defence.

Any enemy vehicle around the T-34-85’s BR can destroy it if it can get a solid shot on the hull armour. Beware when exposing hull when coming out to take a shot on an enemy, someone is bound to be watching for the T-34-85 and they won’t be afraid to plant a shell into the 45 mm hull armour.

History

Aid from Soviet Union

In October 1950, the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army began to fight in North Korea. The 13th Corps of the Volunteer Army, which was the first troop to go abroad to fight, and the following 9th Corps were mainly made up of infantry units. In October 1950, the 6th Guards Mechanized Army of the Soviet Transbaikal Military Region formed 10 tank and self-propelled gun regiments, each of which was equipped with 30 T-34s, 6 IS-2s, and 4 ISU-122s. In November, these 10 regiments entered China and handed over their equipment to help the PLA in forming 3 tank divisions, 3 independent tank regiments, and 1 tank training base. This was the first time that the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army ever had access to Soviet-made medium tanks and self-propelled guns.

On March 31, 1951, the Volunteer Army Armored Corps forming the first echelon entered North Korea with the 1st and 2nd Regiment of the 1st Tank Division, the 3rd Regiment of the Tank 2nd Division, with an air defense battalion and one engineer battalion affiliated to these armoured units. A tank division in the early days of the Volunteer Army’s entry into North Korea was made up of: 2 armoured regiments, 1 motorized infantry regiment, 1 reconnaissance battalion, an air defense battalion, and an engineer battalion. Each tank regiment consisted of 30 medium tanks, 6 heavy tanks, and 4 self-propelled guns.

Fight for freedom and independence

As the United Nation’s armed forces had overwhelming air superiority over the Volunteer Army, these T-34/85 tanks generally adopted ambush tactics, and have repeatedly achieved significant victories over their rivals. The most legendary battle happened to the No. 215 T-34/85 tank commanded by Yang Aru, which destroyed 5 US M26 «Pershing» tanks in a roll! The only head-on confrontation between the Volunteer Army Armored Corps and the UN tanks took place on the Cheorwon Front in October, 1951. The Second Tank Regiment destroyed 9 Thai M24 light tanks at the 190.8th Heights without any casualties of their own. Throughout the entire war, the Chinese T-34/85 tanks destroyed 79 UN armoured vehicles and 432 emplacements (such as pillboxes and machine gun nests) with little casualties, which supported the infantry combat and contributed a lot to the victory.

The T-34/85 medium tanks and their domestic modification (the T-34/85 Gai) were in service in the PLA Army field troops until the 1990s, and there were still a small number of T-34/85 serving the Marine Corps in 2000. The No. 215 tank commanded by Yang Aru was awarded the title of «People’s Heroic Tank» and is currently on public display in the Beijing Military Museum.

The armour layout of the T-34-85 (S-53) is virtually identical to the T-34-85.

Any enemy vehicle around the T-34-85’s BR bracket can destroy it if it can get a solid shot on the hull armour. Beware when exposing hull when coming out to take a shot on an enemy, someone is bound to be watching for the T-34-85 and they won’t be afraid to plant a shell into the 45 mm hull armour.

Armour type:

  • Rolled homogeneous armour (Hull, Turret roof)
  • Cast homogeneous armour (Turret, Cupola, Driver’s hatch, Machine gun port)
Armour Front (Slope angle) Sides Rear Roof
Hull 45 mm (60°) Front glacis 45 mm (60°) Lower glacis 75 mm (60°) Driver’s hatch 65 mm (30°) Machine gun port 45 mm (39-40°) Top 45 mm Bottom 45 mm (47-49°) Top 45 mm (46°) Bottom 20 mm
Turret 90 mm (1-69°) Turret front 90 + 40 mm (8-61°) Gun mantlet 75 mm (19-22°) Front 2/3rd 52 mm (13-19°) Rear 1/3rd 52 mm (9°) 20 mm

The T-34-85 (S-53) has excellent mobility for a medium tank, as expected of a T-34. It can reach high speeds both on and off-road thanks to its wide tracks. The reverse speed is not exactly great, but it is significantly better than those of comparable Shermans, Panthers, and early T-34s (76 mm, 57 mm variants).
